This year's summer-autumn rice crop in Yen Thanh district achieved an outstanding yield of 7 tons/ha. Following the motto "better to harvest while the rice is still green than to let it ripen too much," farmers in Yen Thanh are actively racing to harvest their rice to avoid damage from floods and minimize losses.

Visiting the rice fields in Nhan Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, we saw farmers beginning to harvest the summer-autumn rice crop.

Mr. Nguyen Tho Tinh from Nhan Thanh commune happily shared: "My family cultivates 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares) of rice, and this year we had a bumper crop, no less than the spring crop, averaging over 3.5 quintals per sao. Especially, the rice is fetching a good price; traders came directly to the fields to buy it at 700,000 VND per quintal."

Many rice fields are nearly 90% ripe, but the villagers are still urgently harvesting them and bringing them to dry in the village's storage yards to protect them from unpredictable rainy and windy weather.

Mr. Phan Van Kien, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhan Thanh commune, said: This year, Nhan Thanh commune planted 537 hectares of rice during the summer-autumn crop season. The commune directed farmers to strictly adhere to the district's planting schedule and to include high-quality rice varieties in the crop structure. They also applied scientific and technical methods effectively, combined with intensive farming according to each growth cycle of the rice plant. As a result, this year's summer-autumn rice crop is bountiful, estimated to average over 7 tons per hectare.

The commune advises farmers to take advantage of favorable weather to speed up the harvesting of the summer-autumn rice crop, avoiding storms and floods in the coming period. The commune has mobilized more than 10 combine harvesters for the farmers, carrying out the harvesting in stages across each field. Thanks to the hardened internal field road system, agricultural vehicles can easily reach the fields to transport the rice.

Mr. Le Van Hong, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Yen Thanh District, added: This year's summer-autumn crop in Yen Thanh District covers over 10 hectares of rice, with an estimated yield of over 7 tons/ha (3 quintals/ha higher than the previous crop). The reason for the bumper crop is the favorable weather conditions this summer-autumn season, resulting in fewer pests and diseases. The district has also introduced high-yielding pure rice varieties such as Huong Thom No. 1, Bac Thom No. 7, and Bac Thom 9 into its crop structure.

However, since the summer-autumn crop season is often affected by floods, to ensure the success of the harvest, the district advises farmers in the communes to harvest quickly when the rice fields reach over 90% ripeness to avoid losses.

Currently, Yen Thanh district has mobilized over 50 combine harvesters, simultaneously harvesting over 1,500 hectares in flood-prone communes such as Long Thanh, Khanh Thanh, Phu Thanh, and Nhan Thanh… It is expected that the summer-autumn rice harvest will be completed by August 25th.
