Just released from prison, three people got life sentences for drug trafficking
Thanh, Hoai, and Minh met while in prison. After being released, they contacted each other to buy and sell drugs. The business was exposed, and all three were sent to prison with indefinite sentences.
On January 10, the People's Court of Nghe An province opened the first instance trial of 3 defendants for the crime of illegal drug trafficking. The defendants include: Nguyen Phu Long Thanh (born in 1976), residing in Van Chuong ward, Dong Da district, Hanoi; Vi Xuan Hoai (born in 1954), residing in Luong Minh commune, Tuong Duong district and Kha Van Minh (born in 1977), residing in Xa Luong commune, Tuong Duong district (Nghe An).

According to the case file, the three defendants met each other while in prison. In March 2023, after being released from prison, Thanh took a bus to meet Hoai and ordered 3 heroin cakes and 20 packages of pink drugs to bring to Hanoi to sell. However, because Thanh asked to buy on credit, Hoai did not agree to sell.
Two months later, Thanh continued to contact Hoai to buy drugs. The two sides agreed on 1 heroin cake, priced at 120 million VND and 2 million VND for each pink package, Thanh paid 170 million VND in advance.
On the afternoon of May 15, 2023, Hoai went up the hill behind his house (in Dua village, Luong Minh commune) to buy 3 heroin cakes and 16 heroin packages on credit from a man (unknown identity and background). After buying the drugs, Hoai brought them home to hide.
Two days later, after receiving the money transferred by Thanh, Hoai called Minh to hire him to deliver the “goods” for a fee of 5 million VND. Minh agreed and delivered the drugs to Thanh.
After purchasing the drugs, Thanh intended to bring them back to Hanoi to sell. However, on the way, he was arrested by the police on a passenger bus on the night of May 18, 2023.
Expanding the investigation, on January 10 and January 15, 2024, Nghe An provincial police arrested and searched the homes of Vi Xuan Hoai and Kha Van Minh.
The investigation agency determined that the defendants Nguyen Phu Long Thanh, Kha Van Minh and Vi Xuan Hoai must bear criminal responsibility for the act of buying and selling more than 1.3 kg of drugs.
At the trial, all three defendants admitted to their crimes. Defendant Thanh said that because he knew Hoai while in prison, after being released from prison, he borrowed money from relatives to buy drugs for his own use and “sold to whoever bought it.”
Defendant Hoai said that he wanted to sell drugs to earn some money for his retirement due to a stroke. Defendant Minh admitted that he actively helped the two defendants in the case because he was greedy for the 5 million VND.
At the trial, the defendants expressed remorse and asked the court for a chance to live.
Considering that in this case, the defendants committed crimes with aggravating circumstances of recidivism and large amounts of drugs, the panel sentenced Nguyen Phu Long Thanh, Vi Van Hoai, and Kha Van Minh to life in prison.
