Due to the late summer-autumn crop season, the harvest is just beginning in the highlands of Tuong Duong at this time. Fearing storms and heavy rain, the villagers are speeding up the harvesting process while the sun is still shining.

Ms. Lo Thi Tam, from Quang Phuc village, Tam Dinh commune, said: “Last year, the unusual rain caught us off guard, causing many areas of unharvested rice to sprout. Learning from that experience, this time, with the sun shining, we are urgently harvesting. We hire harvesting machines for the large fields, and harvest by hand for the smaller ones.” Photo: Dinh Tuan

Although the rice is not yet fully ripe, only about 75-80%, the farmers have decided to harvest it. Ms. Lo Thi Tuyen, from Quang Phuc village, Tam Dinh commune, said: “The rice will be fully ripe in about a week, but we were afraid of rain so we had to harvest early. At this point, my family has almost finished harvesting the summer-autumn crop.” Photo: Dinh Tuan

The rice still has many green grains, but the motto for the summer-autumn crop is "better to harvest while the rice is still green than to let it ripen in the field," especially at this time, with news of typhoon number 4 potentially making landfall, so farmers are urgently harvesting to "beat the storm." According to many locals, although this year's weather has been unusual, significantly affecting the growth and development of rice, the overall yield of the summer-autumn crop is quite good. Photo: Dinh Tuan
