(Baonghean.vn) - To switch to drought-resistant crops, for many years, Tho Son commune in Anh Son district has chosen black sesame as the main crop in its summer-autumn production structure. At this time, farmers in Tho Son are very excited to harvest sesame, because this year's black sesame crop is both bountiful and fetches good prices.

Sesame plants are characterized by their adaptability to various soil types, short growing season (approximately 75 days), and drought tolerance; making them suitable for conversion in areas lacking reliable water sources. Therefore, for many years, farmers in Tho Son have been converting large areas previously used for less productive corn and peanut cultivation to black sesame farming.

Local farmers are delighted because this year's summer-autumn sesame crop has yielded high productivity (1.7 - 2 yến/sào) and fetched good prices (over 40,000 VND/kg).

This year, during the summer-autumn season, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dao's family in Hamlet 7, Tho Son Commune, planted 2 sao (approximately 0.2 hectares) of black sesame, earning nearly 2.5 million VND. Mrs. Dao stated: "The investment cost for growing sesame is low, the cultivation techniques are quite easy, and it's suitable for areas with limited water. Sesame yields are quite high (about 1.7 yến/sao), and the current price is 40-45 thousand VND/kg. This is the crop that brings the highest economic value among all summer-autumn crops."

Black sesame seeds are a popular commodity in the market, so sales are quite favorable. Therefore, in recent years, farmers in Tho Son have actively expanded the area of sesame cultivation in the commune. To date, the entire commune has over 30 hectares of sesame, planted evenly across 11 hamlets and villages.

After drying, the sesame seeds are carefully sifted and sorted for retail sale or supply to traders; this year, sesame prices are quite high, so farmers in Tho Son are earning 25 million VND/hectare.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Canh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tho Son commune, said: Currently, the area planted with black sesame accounts for over 40% of the total summer-autumn crop area in the locality. The sesame cultivation model not only brings high economic efficiency, but also generates an income of 25 million VND/hectare within 2 months.

The commune will continue to encourage local people to expand the area planted with sesame in the summer-autumn season next year, in order to improve economic efficiency and at the same time improve and increase soil fertility.
