Of which, 482 households are poor (accounting for 33.06%), 670 households are near-poor (accounting for 45.95%). Ngoc Lam has 6 ethnic groups living together: Thai, Kinh, Kho Mu, O Du, Tho, Muong. Since its establishment in 2009, Ngoc Lam people have mainly lived by farming, mainly growing acacia, combined with small-scale livestock farming and seasonal work, life is still very difficult. Ngoc Lam is known as the "resettlement commune" of Thanh Chuong district, where Thai ethnic people from Huu Khuong commune, Tuong Duong district came to live, giving up their land to build Ban Ve hydropower plant since 2009. People in their new place were very confused with the new way of doing business and living, especially because there was not much land, and exploiting secondary forest products was not as convenient as in their old hometown. Up to now, people's lives have stabilized, but the rate of poor and near-poor households is still very high. Thanh Chuong district Farmers' Association has supported households to build nurseries of acacia trees of purebred varieties. Photo: Thanh Phuc

Officials of the Thanh Chuong District Farmers' Association and the People's Committee of Ngoc Lam Commune guide people to choose quality acacia seedlings to cut and grow in the garden. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khanh (right of the photo) - Chairman of the Thanh Chuong District Farmers' Association said that the construction of acacia nursery in Ngoc Lam Commune stems from the fact that the acacia seedlings that people are using are mainly purchased from floating sources on the market, leading to the situation that acacia seedlings planted for 1-3 years often die for unknown reasons, causing great losses to people. Therefore, the District Farmers' Association contacted the Institute of Industrial Crops, guiding people to buy pure acacia seedlings to build a nursery. Photo: Thanh Phuc

According to officials of the People's Committee of Ngoc Lam Commune, currently, the price of acacia seedlings that Ngoc Lam people buy from other localities ranges from 600 - 1,000 VND/tree pot. Ngoc Lam people usually plant about 3,000 acacia seedlings per hectare, equivalent to the cost of buying seedlings of 1.8 million VND to 3 million VND/ha depending on the time, not including travel and transportation costs. Therefore, building acacia nurseries right in the locality helps people proactively source quality seedlings. Photo: Thanh Phuc
