(Baonghean.vn) - The main livelihood of the people in Ngoc Lam border commune (Thanh Chuong district) is planting acacia trees. Previously, people had to buy acacia seedlings from other localities at a relatively high price and cost. Now, the government and people have decided to borrow capital to build a nursery for purebred seedlings to serve their own needs.

Ngoc Lam border commune is located more than 20km from the center of Thanh Chuong district. The commune has 6 villages with over 1,450 households and 6,175 inhabitants. Of these, 482 households are poor (33.06%), and 670 households are near-poor (45.95%). Ngoc Lam is home to six ethnic groups: Thai, Kinh, Khmu, O Du, Tho, and Muong. Since its establishment in 2009, the people of Ngoc Lam have mainly lived by farming, primarily acacia cultivation, combined with small-scale livestock farming and seasonal work; their lives remain extremely difficult. Regarding acacia cultivation, the people shared that buying acacia seedlings is quite expensive and they have to travel to other localities to purchase them. Photo: Hoai Thu

Ngoc Lam is known as the "resettlement commune" of Thanh Chuong district, where ethnic Thai people from Huu Khuong commune, Tuong Duong district, moved to settle after giving up their land for the construction of the Ban Ve hydroelectric power plant in 2009. The people were initially unfamiliar with the new way of life and livelihood, especially the limited land and the less favorable conditions for exploiting non-timber forest products compared to their old homes. While their lives have stabilized, the percentage of poor and near-poor households remains very high. The Thanh Chuong District Farmers' Association has supported the households in establishing nurseries for purebred acacia seedlings. (Photo: Thanh Phuc)

Officials from the Thanh Chuong District Farmers' Association and the Ngoc Lam Commune People's Committee are guiding local people in selecting high-quality acacia seedlings for cutting and planting in the nursery. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Khanh (right in the photo) - Chairman of the Thanh Chuong District Farmers' Association - said that the establishment of the acacia seedling nursery in Ngoc Lam commune stems from the fact that the acacia seedlings currently used by farmers are mainly purchased from unreliable sources on the market, leading to a situation where acacia trees planted for 1-3 years often die for unknown reasons, causing significant losses for farmers. Therefore, the District Farmers' Association contacted the Institute of Industrial Crops and guided farmers to purchase purebred acacia seedlings to establish the nursery. Photo: Thanh Phuc

Mr. Luong Van Hai, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ngoc Lam commune, said that the total area of acacia trees in the commune is over 200 hectares, with about 90% of households growing acacia. This year, for the first time, the commune has a model acacia seedling nursery, with seedlings sourced from the Agricultural Institute. The model received a loan of 100 million VND from the District Farmers' Association Support Fund for the acacia seedling nursery group (9 members), and the commune provided land for the nursery's construction. Mr. Lo Van Dau, from Tan Lam village, is the group leader. The nursery has a capacity of about 50,000 seedlings per harvest. Photo: Thanh Phuc

According to officials from Ngoc Lam commune, the current price of acacia seedlings that Ngoc Lam residents buy from other localities ranges from 600 to 1,000 VND per seedling. Each hectare of acacia trees in Ngoc Lam typically requires about 3,000 seedlings, equivalent to 1.8 million to 3 million VND per hectare depending on the time of year, not including travel and transportation costs. Therefore, establishing an acacia nursery right in the locality helps farmers proactively secure a source of quality seedlings. (Photo: Thanh Phuc)
