Wayne Rooney retires from England team

After 119 appearances for England, Wayne Rooney scored 53 goals. The former MU player said goodbye to his national team career to focus on playing for Everton.

After 14 years of playing with 119 appearances for the England team, striker Wayne Rooney officially announced his decision to retire from international football on August 23, devoting his energy and mind to playing for Everton.

The Football Association later confirmed Rooney's final decision, as the Everton player was informed that manager Gareth Southgate wanted him back in the squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Rooney said: "Before making this extremely difficult decision, I discussed it with my family, friends and Everton manager Ronald Koeman. Playing for the Three Lions is a privilege, every time I am called up, whether as a regular player or captain, I feel it is a privilege. Thank you everyone for your help."

In September 2015, Rooney surpassed legendary Bobby Charlton to become England's all-time leading scorer, with a penalty in England's 2-0 win over Switzerland in the EURO 2016 qualifiers.

The successful penalty kick was Rooney's 50th goal for England, surpassing the 49-goal mark set by legend Charlton in May 1970./.
