Border commune in Nghe An urgently evacuated 19 households due to risk of landslides

On the afternoon of July 21, due to the continuous heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area, Nhon Mai commune authorities urgently evacuated 19 households from areas at high risk of flash floods and landslides.

Mr. Le Hong Thai - Chairman of Nhon Mai Commune People's Committee said that on the afternoon of July 21, the government and functional forces urgently evacuated 19 households with 65 people in residential group No. 1, Xoi Voi village, Nhon Mai commune, to avoid the risk of landslides.

These are households located in areas at high risk of landslides, since the flash flood on the evening of May 29. According to the results of the field inspection after the flash flood, from residential group No. 1 to the positive slope of Pha Mat mountain (Xoi Voi village) about 120m horizontally, a crack about 500m long, 0.6-1.15m wide appeared, with many sections falling from the natural ground level from 1.05m to 1.5m.

“Due to the impact of storm No. 3, from the night of July 19 until now, the commune has been experiencing heavy to very heavy rain, with a high risk of landslides. We have decided to evacuate all 19 households with 65 people in this high-risk landslide area to the village's community cultural house. The relocation will be completed this afternoon. Preparations for temporary accommodation for the people are also being urgently completed,” Mr. Thai informed.

On the afternoon of July 21, Nhon Mai commune authorities mobilized local militia forces with the support of Nhon Mai Border Guard Station to set up temporary shelters and arrange places for people to eat, rest, and live at the village community cultural house.

By the afternoon of the same day, the work of assisting people to move to temporary accommodation was completed. Representatives of local leaders were present to hand out necessities and encourage people to feel secure in taking shelter from the storm, ensuring their safety.

According to local leaders, this is a temporary solution. In the long term, the People's Committee of Nhon Mai commune has proposed that the competent authorities consider relocating and resettling to ensure the safety of the above households.
