My Ly has a total area27,000 hectaresLocated in mountainous terrain, the commune has 12 villages with a population of...5,581 peopleof 1,247 households. 90% of the population of My Ly commune belongs to the Thai ethnic community. The commune has 3 Mong villages: Nhot Lot, Pha Chieng, Pieng Vai; and 1 Khmu village: Huoi Pun. The central village of My Ly commune is Xieng Tam.

My Ly is also a commune located upstream of the Ban Ve hydroelectric reservoir, where the Nam Non river flows through. Within the commune, there is a large stream called Khe Tam that flows into the Nam Non river.

While Ky Son is the poorest district in Nghe An province, My Ly is the poorest commune in Ky Son, with a multidimensional poverty rate reaching 73.3%. However, a consolation for the local government and the people of My Ly is the majestic mountains, beautiful scenery, and especially the ancient Yen Hoa tower.
