Nghe An has 419 km of border with the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the province with the longest border with Laos in the country. Nghe An is also a locality with 27 communes located in the land border area, of which the commune with the longest border with Laos isMy Ly (Ky Son).

My Ly has a total area of27,000 hectareslocated on high mountainous terrain. The commune has 12 residential villages with a population of5,581 peopleof 1,247 households. 90% of the population of My Ly commune belongs to the Thai ethnic community. The commune has 3 Mong villages: Nhot Lot, Pha Chieng, Pieng Vai; 1 Kho Mu village is Huoi Pun. The central village of My Ly commune is Xieng Tam.

My Ly is also a commune located upstream of Ban Ve hydroelectric reservoir, where the Nam Non stream flows through. In the area, there is a large stream flowing into Nam Non, called Tam stream.
