What are the penalties for a car whose registration has expired?
Mr. Nguyen Van H. from Thanh Vinh ward asks what the penalties are for a car whose inspection certificate has expired.
Reply:
Vehicle inspection is the process of checking and ensuring that a car meets technical safety and environmental protection standards. If your car is not inspected on time, you may be subject to administrative penalties.
According to the new regulations, the fine for cars with expired registration applies even if the vehicle is overdue by just one day.

According to Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, vehicles with expired registration (overdue technical safety and environmental protection inspection certificate) will be subject to administrative penalties if they participate in traffic. The penalty amount depends on the length of time the registration has expired and the type of vehicle (personal or commercial transport), with higher penalties than before.
In addition to fines, vehicles may be impounded if the violation is overdue by one month or more, and the driver may have their driver's license suspended for 1-3 months, along with points deducted from their license.
Below is a summary of all penalties for expired vehicle inspection certificates according to Decree 168/2024/ND-CP.
