A truck plowed into a crowd in the center of Stockholm, Sweden, killing at least two people and injuring many others.

The incident occurred on Drottningatan, one of the city's major pedestrian streets, at around 3 pm today, according to the BBC.

At least two people died and several others were injured when a truck plowed into a crowd in the center of the Swedish capital Stockholm, Reuters reported, citing Swedish police. Meanwhile, radio station Sveriges, EKOT, reported three deaths.

The area has been cordoned off by the police.

"I saw hundreds of people running, they were running for their lives," a witness named Anna told the Aftonbladet newspaper. She also fled the scene. Several witnesses said they saw many people lying on the ground.

A truck crashed into the Ahlens store on Drottningatan Street, and smoke billowed from the scene. Helicopters hovered over the city center while a large number of police and ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

It is unclear whether this was an attack or an accident, but the incident follows a series of attacks in Europe in which perpetrators used cars as weapons.
