Heartbreaking story of a child with congenital biliary atresia.

(Baonghean.vn) - At only 10 months old, Phan Van Khoi, the son of Ms. Nguyen Thi Sen and Mr. Phan Van Kien in Tra Lan hamlet, Phuc Son commune (Anh Son district), is already suffering from numerous illnesses and enduring daily pain.

Following the directions, we found Ms. Nguyen Thi Sen's house, a small, dilapidated house at the end of the village, but the doors were closed. Upon inquiring with neighbors, we learned that for the past two weeks, Ms. Sen and her child had been staying at a temple about 7 kilometers away, while her husband had gone to work cutting acacia trees to earn extra money for their child's treatment.

Upon arriving at the small temple in Duc Son commune, Ms. Sen was holding her nearly 10-month-old son, a sight that brought tears to everyone's eyes. Her son, Phan Van Khoi, was as thin as a frog, frail, with bluish lips and yellowish skin. Sometimes, when he had difficulty breathing, Ms. Sen had to give him oxygen.

With a swollen, distended belly, visible veins, a protruding navel, and enlarged testicles, breathing and defecating were very difficult for the child. The child was in a lot of pain and very weak, his face contorted in pain and he was whimpering.

Wiping away tears, Ms. Sen said: "Since birth, my child has been weak and sickly. We took her to the district hospital for treatment, but it didn't work, so we took her to the provincial hospital. The provincial hospital then referred us to the National Children's Hospital. There, the doctors examined her and concluded that she has congenital gallbladder atrophy, and now she has liver failure as well. If she doesn't receive timely and proper treatment, she probably won't survive."

As a poor household in the commune, the couple's main source of income is working as laborers. After nearly 10 months of their child's illness, Ms. Sen's family has become even more destitute. Therefore, for the past two weeks, she and her child have had to seek refuge at the temple.

In her despair, Ms. Sen confided: "From the moment she was born, my child has had to endure much pain from illness and multiple surgeries... However, with the heart of a mother, I never give up hope that one day my child will be cured."
