How to handle when the accelerator pedal is stuck

When the car is stuck on the throttle, brake hard and keep it steady, shift to neutral (N) and even turn off the engine to control the situation..

The accelerator pedal is stuck or the accelerator pedal suddenly accelerates even though the driver only presses lightly or does not press it at all, this is an error that occurs due to the vehicle control software itself or technical errors. In this case, the driver cannot directly intervene to unstick the accelerator pedal, so it is necessary to use another method to bring the vehicle to a safe stop as quickly as possible.

Toyota had a record recall in 2010 for vehicles of the Toyota and Lexus brands that had sudden acceleration problems. To handle this situation, Toyota experts have given advice with the following steps:

1. With manual transmission

Step 1:Press the brake pedal firmly and maintain even pressure. Do not press and release the brake pedal repeatedly as this may cause loss of brake assist.

Step 2: Depress the clutch fully. This action breaks the connection, preventing the engine from transmitting energy to the wheels, so the vehicle only runs on inertia.

Step 3:Shift to neutral (N), keep the brakes steady, carefully pull the car over to the side of the road, and call for help.

2. With automatic transmission

Step 1: Press the brake hard and keep it steady, similar to a manual transmission vehicle.

Step 2:Put the gear lever in neutral (N).

Step 3:Continue to hold the brake and pull back to the curb similar to the manual transmission.

If you can't get to N, turn off the engine. This will cause the car to lose power steering, making the steering heavier, but the brakes and steering will still work. For cars with push buttons, turn it off by pressing and holding the button for about 3 seconds to turn off the engine (pressing and releasing will not work). If the car has a regular key fob, turn the key to ACC, do not remove it from the ignition as it may lock the steering wheel.

In addition, if you have applied the foot brake but the car is still moving very fast due to high inertia, you can also apply the hand brake. Although this type of brake only works on the two rear wheels, it also helps to reduce speed faster.
