Pig farm fined for discharging wastewater into Nha Le Canal.
Following reports by Nghe An newspapers, radio, and television about a pig farm located in the middle of a residential area in Quynh Phu commune causing pollution and discharging wastewater into Nha Le Canal, the local authorities inspected the facility, compiled a report, and fined the owner 1.5 million VND.
On September 7th, Mr. Tran Viet Phac, Head of the Economic Department of Quynh Phu commune, stated that following reports from Nghe An newspaper and radio/television about a pig farm located in the middle of a residential area in Tho Son hamlet causing pollution and discharging wastewater into Nha Le Canal, the local authorities inspected the facility, compiled a report, and fined the owner 1.5 million VND.
Specifically, the People's Committee of the commune recently issued a decision to impose an administrative fine of 1.5 million VND on the owner of a pig farm in Tho Son village for the act of "household livestock farming without measures to treat manure and wastewater to ensure environmental hygiene and causing harm to surrounding people".
Furthermore, according to Mr. Phac, the local authorities have also requested this livestock farmer to cease the violations, collect, dredge, and treat the pollution at the discharge points, and restore the environment to its original condition.
Previously, Nghe An Newspaper and Radio and Television published an article."A pig farm located in the middle of a residential area is causing pollution and discharging waste into the Nha Le Canal."This reflects the situation of a pig farm located right next to the residential area of Tho Son village, Quynh Phu commune.
According to residents, the farm's operations generate a strong, unpleasant odor, affecting the lives of surrounding households. Notably, behind the livestock pens are pipes leading to the Nha Le Canal, and residents have repeatedly observed wastewater from the farm flowing into the canal.
Immediately after receiving the complaint, the Quỳnh Phú commune authorities sent officials to investigate. Previously, the local authorities had also requested the farm to stop raising pigs after receiving complaints from residents. However, after selling off the entire herd, the owner continued to bring pigs back to raise.
According to the inspection results of the People's Committee of Quynh Phu commune, this livestock facility has two barns. One barn, with an area of approximately 140m², is currently unused; the other barn, approximately 170m², is currently housing 27 fattening pigs with a total weight of about 1,620kg.
The facility has a spherical biogas digester with a diameter of 2.8m and a volume of approximately 11.5m³. A wastewater collection pipeline system has also been installed to channel wastewater into the biogas digester.
Regarding the discharge of wastewater into the environment, inspection and verification results show that, between June 28, 2026 and August 1, 2026, the wastewater pipeline leading to the biogas digester was damaged. Therefore, livestock wastewater was not collected and treated according to regulations but flowed directly into the land behind the livestock pens, adjacent to the Nha Le Canal. This situation caused unpleasant odors, affecting the health and lives of surrounding residents.
According to the People's Committee of Quynh Phu commune, wastewater generated from livestock farming and barn cleaning is now collected in biogas digesters. Livestock farmers have also implemented measures to clean their barns and reduce odors; the problem of foul odors has been largely resolved.
