The world's most expensive license plate appears, priced at over 3 million USD
With just one letter, this number plate was sold for 2.6 million pounds and became the most expensive number plate in the world.
Recently, a personalized license plate – R was auctioned in Hong Kong (China) for a price of up to 2.6 million pounds (equivalent to 3.1 million USD, converted to Vietnamese currency is 74 billion VND). This is the most expensive license plate ever.

The Bangkok Post reported that this license plate was one of 49 auctioned during the Lunar New Year by the Hong Kong Transport Department. The starting price for this R license plate was 525 pounds (equivalent to 15 million VND) but then increased rapidly due to many people interested. A tycoon there offered a price of 210,000 pounds but after 60 rounds, the final price was about 5,200 times higher than the original price.
In addition, the price of this license plate R is also more than double the original estimated price of 1.05 million pounds. The reason this license plate has such a high price is because the letter R is related to racing cars and is one of the lucky letters according to Chinese beliefs.

Also in this auction, more than 292 license plates were sold with starting prices from 8,900 GBP (equivalent to 253 million VND). One auction participant said he had to go through fierce competition in the auction room to be able to buy an ideal license plate.
He was also not surprised that the R plate sold for a sky-high price because “billionaires are always willing to pay a lot of money for a car plate that brings them luck”. In addition, “I also would not be surprised if a plate sold for 50 million Hong Kong dollars in the future”, he shared.
