(Baonghean.vn) - Dozens of accidents have occurred, including three fatalities, due to the severely deteriorated condition of the pedestrian bridge spanning the Thai River connecting the two communes of Quynh Hung and Quynh Dien (Quynh Luu district).
Following a request from the People's Committees of Quynh Hung and Quynh Dien communes for support in rebuilding the bridge, the Provincial People's Committee recently approved the reconstruction with a budget of 4.5 billion VND. Of this amount, the provincial budget will contribute 3 billion VND, Quynh Luu district 1 billion VND, and Quynh Hung and Quynh Dien communes 500 million VND each.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quy, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Luu District, said: The bridge will be newly constructed, with a width of 3.5m and a length of 35m. The approach roads at both ends of the bridge meet the design criteria for rural roads of type B. The project is scheduled for completion in 2020-2021. Upon completion, the bridge will meet the transportation needs of the local people.

Leading us to see the bridge, Mr. Ho Xuan Minh - Secretary and Head of Hamlet 12, Quynh Hung Commune (Quynh Luu District) said: The pedestrian bridge across the Thai River connecting Hamlet 1, Quynh Dien Commune and Hamlet 12, Quynh Hung Commune, is called the Monkey Bridge by the locals. It was built in 2005 with contributions from the people of both localities. After a long period of use, the bridge has deteriorated, causing difficulties for the daily travel of the people, especially during the rainy season when the bridge could collapse at any time.
Hundreds of people cross this bridge every day. Each time they do, they are very worried because the bridge is in such a serious state of disrepair. The bridge is 35 meters long but only 1 meter wide, while the safety railings are broken and the steep inclines and declines make it very dangerous. This is the reason for several accidents where people fell into the river and drowned.
