Yen Thanh and Dien Chau districts need to strengthen disease surveillance.

(Baonghean.vn) – During an inspection of disease prevention and control efforts against dangerous human diseases on the morning of March 16th, the Deputy Director of the Nghe An Department of Health, Nguyen Xuan Hong, requested that the Medical Centers and General Hospitals of Yen Thanh and Dien Chau districts strengthen their monitoring activities.

In Yen Thanh district, from the beginning of 2017 to the present, there have been 7 scattered suspected cases of whooping cough, with 3 cases in Van Thanh commune alone; no other dangerous infectious diseases have occurred in the area.

Information from Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital: From the beginning of the year until now, the hospital has received and treated 53 children suspected of having whooping cough. 50% of the suspected whooping cough children are under 3 months old. Of these, 47 children are from 13 districts, cities, and towns in Nghe An province; 5 children are from Ha Tinh province; 1 child is from Quang Ninh province; 5 cases have been transferred to central hospitals for treatment, and 2 children have died.On the evening of March 15th, the Tropical Diseases Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital admitted NTT, a 14-year-old girl from Dien Hai commune, Dien Chau district. On the morning of March 16th, NTT developed rabies and was taken home by her family because she could not be cured.

Working with the Medical Center, Yen Thanh District General Hospital and Van Thanh Commune Health Station, Deputy Director of Nghe An Department of Health Nguyen Xuan Hong stated: In the context of increasing risk of disease outbreaks and complex developments, Yen Thanh needs to do a good job of disease surveillance to promptly detect the first cases in order to prevent and control the spread; and do a good job of vaccination to prevent disease.

In Dien Chau district, since the beginning of the year, there have been 9 suspected cases of whooping cough; 76 cases of chickenpox; and 87 cases of mumps, concentrated in kindergartens in Dien Hoang and Dien Doai communes. In addition, there are 4 communes in the district with outbreaks of avian influenza, but these have been well contained and suppressed, with no transmission to humans.

The leaders of the Dien Chau District Health Center also reported to the working group of the Nghe An Provincial Department of Health that some schools in the area were concealing information about the actual number of students absent from school due to colds and illnesses when the unit conducted monitoring and investigation.

Speaking at a working session with the Dien Chau District Health Center, Deputy Director of the Nghe An Department of Health Nguyen Xuan Hong requested: As a locality with a high risk of disease outbreaks, health units in Dien Chau district need to actively advise Party committees and authorities at all levels on disease prevention and control; strengthen surveillance at health stations, clinics, and district hospitals; increase testing activities to detect diseases; and when suspected cases arise, properly collect and treat them, and take precautions for isolation.
