Yen Thanh district is urgently harvesting over 4,500 hectares of rice crops to protect them from flooding.
(Baonghean.vn) - Following the motto "better to harvest early than risk damage in the field," farmers in Yen Thanh district are urgently harvesting rice in low-lying areas these days to avoid losses caused by storms and heavy rain.

In the Ca field, Lien Thanh commune (Yen Thanh district), combine harvesters are operating at full capacity. Ms. Phan Thi Minh from Hamlet 3, Lien Thanh commune, said: "My family cultivates 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of rice, mainly the Khang Dan variety. Currently, the rice is only about 80% ripe, but this season the weather has been unusually rainy and windy, so we have to harvest early to be sure of a good harvest." According to Ms. Minh, due to the impact of typhoon No. 3, much of the rice was flattened, resulting in a yield of only 2 quintals per sao, a decrease of 50 kg per sao per season compared to the previous season.
Lien Thanh commune has over 414 hectares of summer-autumn rice, including 150 hectares in flood-prone areas. To date, the commune has mobilized over 10 combine harvesters to harvest the flood-prone areas, with harvesting expected to be completed by September 3rd. Due to the impact of storms and heavy rain, this year's rice yield is only 45-46 quintals/hectare.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duong, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Yen Thanh District, shared: The district has directed communes with over 85% of their summer-autumn rice crop ripening to proceed with harvesting to avoid risks caused by floods. At this time, communes in flood-prone areas such as Lien Thanh, Vinh Thanh, Nhan Thanh, Bao Thanh… are harvesting. Most communes are hiring combine harvesters, so the progress is very fast. It is expected that by September 5th, over 4,500 hectares of rice in flood-prone areas will be harvested; and by around September 20th, over 12,500 hectares of summer-autumn rice will be harvested.
Due to the impact of typhoon No. 3, Yen Thanh district experienced flooding in over 5,000 hectares of rice fields during the heading and flowering stages. In addition, many areas were damaged by lodging, resulting in low yields for this summer-autumn crop, projected at only 46 quintals/hectare (a decrease of more than 10 quintals/hectare compared to the previous season).
