On August 3rd, in the Chelyabinsk province of Russia's Ural Mountains, the second phase of the joint counter-terrorism exercise between Russia and China, codenamed "Peace Mission - 2013," officially commenced.

Chinese soldiers are equipped with a range of armed vehicles, self-propelled guns, and fixed-wing and rotorcraft, including M-171 and Z-9 helicopters.

The main objective of the exercise was to plan the coordination of government and military organizations in preparing and conducting military operations in joint counter-terrorism activities.

The exercise scenario unfolded in three phases. Phase one, involving troop and equipment deployment, took place from July 27 to August 2. Phase two, from August 3-14, involved the two sides developing action plans, and the final phase – conducting the joint operation – began on August 14-15.

According to the Deputy Commander of the Central Military District of Russia, Major General Sergey Chubakin, in the six years since the two countries conducted their first "Peace Mission" exercises, military cooperation between Russia and China has gained tremendous momentum and is of considerable importance to the interests of both sides.

Joint activities within the framework of the exercise will create new momentum for the relationship and open up new avenues of cooperation between the two countries' militaries.

Russia and China began their "Peace Mission" military exercises in 2005.
