10 interesting things about McLaren's latest supercar
With a dry weight of just 1,198 kg, the Senna is McLaren's lightest road car since the legendary McLaren F1 of the 1990s.
1. Engine: The McLaren Senna is powered by a 4.0-litre M840TR Bi-turbo V8 engine that produces 789bhp and 800Nm of torque. The M840TR is the most powerful engine ever produced by McLaren for a road-legal car. The new-generation V8 also features advanced dry sump technology, a flat-plane crankshaft and Twinscroll turbochargers for ultra-low lag. |
2. Transparent glass door:One of the highlights in the exterior design that makes the McLaren Senna stand out is the transparent glass panel at the bottom of the car door. The material used by McLaren is Gorilla glass. In the lightest version, this glass will be replaced with carbon fiber. |
3. Wing:The McLaren Senna has a massive 1,219 mm rear wing that makes the supercar look more aggressive. In addition, this is one of the most advanced wings ever on a street car - made entirely from ultra-light carbon fiber. With servos that continuously adjust the position, the wing can provide the car with optimal downforce and braking force at all times. |
4. Rear diffuser:The rear diffuser looks like it's split in two, but it's actually one piece made from carbon fiber. It starts below the rear axle and gradually increases in height to draw air from the underbody, keeping the Senna planted by increasing downforce at the rear axle. |
5. Wheels and brakes:Owners of the McLaren Senna will receive exclusive wheels made from ultra-light alloy, equipped with a central locking system like the racing cars. The McLaren Senna is equipped with "the most advanced braking system" with the car's lightweight brake calipers made from carbon fiber and painted in Azura Blu. |
6. Interior:Like all road cars, the McLaren Senna's interior is driver-focused and stripped down to keep weight down. There's a small compartment behind the seats to store two helmets and a racing suit. |
7. Weight:With a dry weight of just 1,198 kg, the Senna is McLaren’s lightest road car since the McLaren F1 of the 1990s. This is thanks to body panels and a chassis made entirely from carbon fiber. Lightweight powertrain components and a minimalist interior also reduce excess weight. |
8. Price:Combining extreme performance with a limited production run of just 500 units worldwide, it's no surprise that the McLaren Senna will come with a hefty price tag. McLaren has now announced the Senna's UK pricing details, with a starting price of £750,000 after tax. |
9. Name:Paying tribute to legendary Brazilian F1 racer and three-time F1 champion Ayrton Senna da Silva, McLaren's latest hypercar promises to be a "superb performance and superb handling" model. Currently, Ayrton Senna's nephew Bruno Senna is also a racer and is a McLaren brand ambassador. |
10. McLaren Senna - A taste of the future:The Senna has borrowed technology from previous McLarens, such as the improved suspension on the P1. Knowledge gained about the Senna's aerodynamics, lightweight components and clear glass on the doors will be applied to other McLaren cars. |
