10 benefits of exercise

Here are 10 benefits of exercise, according to recent studies, compiled by the Huffington Post.

Improve sexual function

Regular physical activity increases blood flow, which directly impacts sexual function, according to Dr. David Katz, founding director of the Center for Preventive Research at Griffin Hospital, Yale University (USA).

A recent study conducted at Emory University (USA), published in the journal Sexual Medicine, highlights that physical activity in young men can help avoid health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and erectile dysfunction.

Changes in gene expression

Scientists believe that environmental factors, including diet, stress, and toxins, can alter human genes, and that influence is passed down from generation to generation.

Research by scientists at Harvard Medical School (USA) shows that walking for an hour a day can reduce the genetic predisposition to obesity.

Good for the skin

Dr. Katz explains that skin reflects overall health. This means that if the body's natural detoxification system—including the kidneys, liver, and spleen—is healthy, then the skin will be radiant and healthy.

Exercise helps the skin eliminate toxins, improves blood circulation so that blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the skin, helping it to be well-nourished, firm, and healthier.

Healthy eyes

According to a recent article in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, regular exercise helps reduce the risk of developing glaucoma.

A study of 5,650 subjects aged 48-90 showed that those who had engaged in moderate physical activity for the past 15 years had a 25% reduced risk of increased intraocular pressure.

According to Dr. Paul J. Foster of the University of London's Ophthalmology Institute (UK), there is definitely a link between a sedentary lifestyle and factors that increase the risk of glaucoma.

Good for sleep

According to a 2012 study published in the journal Health and Physical Activity, people who exercise at a moderate to vigorous level, averaging at least 150 minutes per week (more than 20 minutes per day), have 65% better sleep quality than those who are less active.

Lead researcher Brad Cardinal, a professor at Oregon State University (USA), said there is growing scientific evidence encouraging regular physical activity as an alternative to medication for improving sleep.

Sharp mind

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, making it more alert. A 2012 Swedish study published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed that exercising during breaks at work improved productivity.

In addition, previous studies have shown that regular physical activity helps reduce the risk of dementia and improve memory.

Migraine relief

A study published in the journal Cephalalgia in 2012 showed that regular physical activity may prevent migraines.

Boost your immune system.

According to a report from early 2013, a sedentary person is likely to experience 2-3 respiratory infections per year, while an active person may only get one infection a year.

High spirits

Physical activity stimulates the production of endorphins, hormones that create feelings of euphoria in the brain.

Recent research has further confirmed the link between exercise and happiness. Studies conducted by scientists in Pennsylvania (USA) show that people who are more physically active experience greater feelings of well-being and enthusiasm.

Live long

A 2012 study from Taiwan published in The Lancet showed that just 15 minutes of physical activity a day can extend a person's lifespan by up to three years compared to those who do not exercise.
