No exercise
According to research from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, men who exercise have better erectile and sexual function.
In researchIn this study, nearly 300 people were surveyed about their activity levels. Researchers categorized them into groups: sedentary, lightly active, moderately active, or highly active. Participants also self-reported their sexual quality and performance, including erections, orgasms, and frequency of erections.
The results, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, showed that men who exercised regularly for about 18 hours a week had higher sexual function. Conversely, those who were lazy or did not exercise had lower sexual function.
Smoking too much
A British urology journal conducted a study on the relationship between smoking and male performance. 65 men participated in an "8-week quit smoking" program. They compared the level of erection before quitting, during the program, and after the program ended.
20% of participants admitted to having erectile dysfunction. The final results showed that 75% of those who quit smoking had good erectile function, and sexual desire also improved significantly after the end of the trial.
Similarly, a 2014 study from the University of Sheffield analyzed sperm samples from 1,970 men. Researchers found that less than 4% of the 318 sperm from marijuana users were of normal size and shape. Poorly developed sperm are less likely to successfully fertilize an egg.
No sex
According to a 2008 study published in The American Journal of Medicine, the more sex men have, the less likely they are to suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Researchers analyzed 989 men aged 55 to 75 over five years. Men who had sex less than once a week were twice as likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction as those who had sex once a week. To prevent this condition, men were advised to have sex three times a week.
Lack of sleep
According to research from the University of Michigan, men who don't get enough sleep will have a reduced sex drive the next day and lower fertility.
A 2011 study from the University of Chicago also found that men who slept less than 5 hours a night for a week had significantly lower testosterone levels than those who slept 7-9 hours a night.
Don't eat watermelon
A 2008 study by Texas A&M University found that a component in watermelon called citrulline-arginine has the same effect as viagra, helping to relax blood vessels, treat erectile dysfunction and increase sexual desire.
Eat a lot of fast food
A 2011 Harvard study found that men who ate processed foods high in trans fats (cookies, cakes, chocolate, chips, fried and processed foods), had poorer sex lives and male health than those who followed a healthy diet.
Watch TV a lot
According to a 2010 study from the University of Rochester, men who watched more than 20 hours of television per week had a 44 percent lower sperm count than those who watched little or no television. Researchers found that men who were sedentary due to their TV viewing habits had poorer sperm quality due to lack of physical activity.
Don't wash off sunscreen
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sunscreen can help prevent skin cancer but increase the risk of infertility. Some chemicals in sunscreen can protect against UV rays but can reduce a man's ability to reproduce sperm by up to 30%. NIH said that this is not a reason not to use sunscreen, but men need to get into the habit of using it properly and washing it off when they get home.
Poor oral hygiene
Researchers from the Journal of Periodontology found that gum disease is more common in men with erectile dysfunction. According to a 2012 study, bacteria in gum tissue can travel through the body, causing inflammation and damaging blood vessels in the penis.
No coffee
A team of researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center found that 42% of men who drank two to three cups of coffee a day (85 to 170 mg) were less likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction. The study demonstrated that caffeine relaxes the arteries in the penis, increasing blood flow.
