10 things Trump will do as US president

November 10, 2016 10:17

Observers see Donald Trump's election as US president as a shock not only to the American people but also to the world, even greater than Britain's exit from the EU.

Donald Trump's campaign slogan of "Make America Great Again" is based on many different policy promises, mainly reflecting the "inward-looking" nature of a superpower like the US in the era of globalization. However, it is these promises that helped Trump gain the support of tens of millions of voters and propel him straight to the White House.

1. Building a unified country

This message was announced by Trump himself in his victory speech on the night of November 8 (local time). "Now is the time for Americans to heal the wounds of division. Let us work together. I want to say to all Republicans, Democrats and Independents: this is the time for unity and solidarity," Trump said.

He also praised Hillary Clinton's persistent fighting efforts. Showing "fair play" with the loser, he said of his opponent: "We owe Hillary a great debt of gratitude for her contributions to the country. I say this very sincerely."

For a candidate who once bluntly threatened to jail his opponent if he won, Trump's moderate statements show he is trying to become worthy of his upcoming important position.

2. Repeal 'Obamacare'

“President Trump” is likely to sign a series of executive orders to erase most of President Barack Obama's achievements, most notably the affordable health care program "Obamacare".

Trump could quickly work with Congress to repeal the law, which is almost inevitable because the issue is not only annoying Trump but also much of the Republican Party.

If Congress stands in Trump’s way, he will attack, humiliate, and bully key lawmakers publicly while secretly negotiating behind the scenes. If Trump is smart, he and his Republican allies will not actually repeal Obamacare because many Americans support most of the law and, most importantly, they have no alternative policies.

3. Attack and destroy IS completely

Mr. Trump will continue to bomb IS militants continuously. Although this is not different in nature from the way the US has done it in recent years, Trump will promote it as a new, more effective and powerful attack strategy, criticizing the weakness and weakness of the Obama administration.

Another point to deal with IS is that Mr. Trump said he would send tens of thousands of ground troops to the Middle East. He will certainly enjoy the power of being the commander in chief of the most powerful army in the world.

4. Renegotiate free trade agreements

"President Trump" will quickly announce renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and other important US trade agreements, suspending the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP).

The billionaire could propose small changes to these agreements and claim he has replaced them with “greater” ones, as well as bringing growth to the US.

5. Bring jobs back to America

The statement struck a chord with Trump’s core voters: uneducated and unemployed whites who angrily argue that globalization has sent basic labor jobs overseas.

Trump could impose high tariffs on imports, such as from China and some other countries, to show that he is serious about “bringing jobs back to America.” China would certainly retaliate, which could lead to a “trade war” that would be bad for both sides.

6. Building a 'Great Wall' on the border with Mexico

This was Mr. Trump's most important policy throughout the election campaign, and also the content that helped him attract the most voters.

The billionaire will boast that the wall will reduce crime and create jobs. Instead of Mexico paying for the wall, as Trump has said, the burden will fall on Americans. He will also increase the size of the force dedicated to finding and deporting illegal immigrants.

7. 1,000 billion USD for infrastructure development

Trump is expected to propose a $1 trillion infrastructure package, which Congress could support even if it increases the national debt. He will also pass tax cuts that will benefit the super-rich.

8. Improve relations with Russia

Due to his lack of experience, “President Trump” will have a hard time dealing with complex geopolitical and military situations that could lead to serious, even catastrophic, consequences. The three “candidates” with potential risks are the Middle East, North Korea and China. Meanwhile, the US can improve relations with Russia.

9. Tight control of Muslims

To deal with the threat of terrorist attacks, Trump could ban Muslims from entering the US and increase surveillance of Muslims living in the US. If attacks continue, Trump will continue with more drastic measures such as establishing a registration system or Muslim concentration camps in the US.

More dangerously, Trump's rhetoric about Islam could incite a wave of extremism and religious tension in the US, leading to more violent protests.

10. Tax cuts for the super-rich

Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy will cause budget deficits to rise and public debt to balloon. In fact, the first term of “President Trump” will see a major recession. The stock market could fall by 30%-50% at its peak. Trade wars will hurt the economy and cause unemployment. After all, Trump will blame his opponents and use the situation as an excuse to demand more power.
