100,000 fans registered to march calling on Messi to stay on the national team

Argentina fans are planning a large-scale march in the capital Buenos Aires (Argentina), with the aim of calling on the captain to cancel his decision to retire from international football.

Through a Facebook group called “Don’t Go, Leo,” about 100,000 fans have signed up to march on July 2. The focal point will be Obelisco Square, a familiar victory celebration spot for many clubs in the capital Buenos Aires.

"This Saturday, at 6pm, we will march to the Obelisco to show our love and admiration for him. We hope he continues to wear the national team shirt. Keep going, Messi. Don't leave us," the message read.

A fan shared that on many signs or train stations appeared the words "No Te Vayas, Lio" (Don't go, Leo).

Messi has decided to retire from the Argentina national team, at the age of 29. The reason given by the superstar is that he feels unlucky with the team after reaching the finals many times without winning any titles.

Messi has played in four finals with Argentina, including Copa America 2007, 2015, 2016 and World Cup 2014, but has never won.

In contrast to the national team level, Messi is playing very successfully at Barca. With this club, he has won eight La Liga championships, four Champions Leagues and five Golden Balls.
