11 years in prison for murderer

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of May 5, Nghe An Provincial People's Court opened the first instance trial of Vo Xuan Lam (born 1984), residing in Nghi Lien commune, Vinh city, for the crime of murder.

According to the indictment, at 5:00 p.m. on December 22, 2015, Vo Xuan Lam (born in 1984), residing in Nghi Lien commune, Vinh city, drove a Ware motorbike with license plate number 37 alone to the house of Nguyen Van Vuong (born in 1970), residing in Nghi Phu commune, Vinh city.

At Vuong's house at that time, there were some people sitting around. Among them was Duong Van Thinh (born in 1965), residing in Hung Phuc ward, Vinh city.

15 minutes later, Mr. Thinh approached Lam and said, "Let me go outside and ask you something." Hearing Mr. Thinh call, Lam stood up and followed Mr. Thinh outside. Here, Mr. Thinh asked Lam, "How do you calculate the money you owe me?" Lam said, "I don't have it yet."

The two sides argued loudly with each other. Mr. Thinh grabbed Lam's collar and wanted to hit him, but Lam swung his body and pulled Mr. Thinh's hand away from his collar, then ran into the side door where there was a table. Lam grabbed a knife on Mr. Vuong's table. Hiding the knife on his person, Lam turned around and saw Mr. Thinh walking out onto Lenin Avenue. Calling Mr. Thinh to come back, Lam stabbed Mr. Thinh once with the knife.

Lam took the knife and fled. Mr. Thinh was taken to the emergency room but died two days later.

On February 15, 2016, Vo Xuan Lam turned himself in and admitted his crimes.

In the dock, defendant Vo Xuan Lam admitted to the crime as charged by the People's Procuracy. The defendant apologized to the victim's relatives. During his detention, defendant Lam also paid 380 million VND to the victim's family. Ms. Hong (victim's wife) filed a petition to reduce the sentence for defendant Lam, hoping that the defendant would reform well and return to his hometown to be a good citizen.

Having the last word, the defendant asked the court to reduce his sentence so that he could soon return to his life. The representative of the People's Procuracy proposed a sentence of 11-12 years in prison for the defendant.

Regarding personal background, in 2004, Vo Xuan Lam was sentenced by Nghi Loc District People's Court to 12 months in prison with a suspended sentence for theft of property. In 2010, Lam was fined 7 million VND by Vinh City People's Court for gambling.

Considering the aggravating and mitigating circumstances of the case, the People's Court sentenced defendant Vo Xuan Lam to 11 years in prison./.
