12,000 Honda SH motorbikes in Vietnam have faulty locks

More than 12,000 Honda SH 2015 vehicles that were just released to the market in September and October are being repaired by Honda Vietnam due to a fault in the smart key system.

Under the name of “Service Campaign for SH125/SH150 vehicles”, calling to bring vehicles to dealers to fix errors for free like recalls, Honda Vietnam said they discovered a problem with the smart controller of the Honda Smartkey lock cluster, causing the anti-theft warning system to automatically turn off after being activated in a shorter period of time than the manufacturer's standard.

According to Honda Vietnam, a total of 12,118 new SH models using smart keys are affected, including 6,721 SH 125s and 5,397 SH 150s, manufactured from August 19 to October 6, 2015.

The faulty part is the controller.

The company affirmed that “this problem does not cause any impact on the safety of the vehicle and the driver, nor does it violate national technical regulations and standards. However, to ensure the best performance of the vehicle, Honda Vietnam has decided to replace it free of charge for customers”, starting at the authorized dealer system nationwide from October 26, 2015.

It is known that the smart lock is a completely new feature on the SH 2015 that was just introduced by Honda Vietnam on September 10. With the above production time, it can be seen that the new version of SH125/ SH 150 2015 had errors even before being released to the market.

According to VnMedia's research, these models have faulty smart controllers. Although Honda announced that the locking system will automatically turn off after the smart key is more than 2 meters away from the vehicle for a long enough time (several minutes), in reality, this system cannot turn off automatically. When the anti-theft system is not active, the safety level is reduced, not as Honda announced.

Some Honda dealers said that initially, the time to replace the lock assembly was about 2-3 hours, but at present, the time is shortened to about 1 hour. In addition to the free replacement - as in the recall - the car owner will also receive an additional bottle of engine oil.

Honda SH 2015 was launched on the afternoon of September 10 in Hanoi, with two engine versions of 125 and 150 cc. The most important highlight and difference of SH 2015 is that the vehicle has an additional smart key and 2 new paint colors. The vehicle's suggested selling price has increased by 1 million VND, to 67 and 81 million VND, respectively for SH 125 and SH 150 versions.
