According to the indictment, Nguyen Canh Linh (born in 1980) and Nguyen Thi Hiep (born in 1982) both reside in Hamlet 13, Quynh Tan Commune, Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province. Since the arrival of their second child, their lives have become increasingly difficult, forcing the couple to leave their children with the wife's parents while they work as laborers.
During his time working far from home, Hiep and his wife Linh argued because Linh was too preoccupied with drinking and socializing. In 2012, they returned home for Tet (Lunar New Year), but because she was angry with her husband, Hiep and their child stayed with his wife's family. Seeing that his wife and child hadn't returned home to prepare for Tet, Linh went to call them back, but Hiep adamantly refused to come home.
At approximately 9:30 AM on February 10, 2012 (the first day of the Lunar New Year), Linh, armed with a hammer hidden in the trunk of his motorbike, sped straight to his mother-in-law's house to confront Hiep. Initially, Linh spoke gently, but Hiep refused to leave. Overwhelmed by rage, Linh struck Hiep multiple times on the head with the hammer, causing him to collapse. Hearing the screams, people rushed to take Hiep to the Quỳnh Lưu District General Hospital for emergency treatment, but he died. After committing the crime, Linh surrendered to the Quỳnh Lưu District Police.
According to the forensic examination report No. 19/PC54 dated February 17, 2013, from the Criminal Technical Department of the Nghe An Provincial Police, the cause of death of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hiep was a fractured skull.
At the trial, defendant Nguyen Canh Linh honestly confessed to his crime and showed remorse. The Nghe An Provincial People's Court sentenced Nguyen Canh Linh to 12 years in prison, and the victim's family did not request compensation.
