(Baonghean.vn)- According to Nghe An Newspaper's own source, 13 rare po mu trees have just been cut down by illegal loggers at Pu Huong Nature Reserve.

The incident was discovered by the Cam Muon Commune Forest Protection Management Station (Pu Huong Nature Reserve) on September 10, 2017. The area with the felled trees is in the border area of ​​compartments 9 and 13, Sub-compartment 148, in Quang Phong commune, Que Phong district.

At the time of the incident, the Cam Muon Commune Forest Protection Management Station identified two groups of people cutting down po mu trees. The force arrested a person named Lo Van Phuong, residing in Cam Cang village, Quang Phong commune. The seized evidence included two chainsaws and 11 po mu trees that had been cut down.

From the report of the Pu Huong Nature Reserve Management Board, on September 20, 2017, the Investigation Police Agency of Que Phong District Police and functional forces organized a crime scene investigation, thereby determining that 11 po mu trees were cut down by illegal loggers, with a total volume of 13.69m3.

Based on the results of the on-site investigation, on September 26, 2017, the Investigation Police Agency of Que Phong District Police issued Decision No. 78 to initiate a criminal case on the charge of "Violating regulations on forest exploitation and protection" to investigate and clarify.

On October 26, 2017, expanding the second on-site inspection, the Investigation Police Agency of Que Phong District Police and functional forces discovered in Sub-area 148 that there were 2 more po mu trees cut down by illegal loggers, with a volume of 1.627m3.

Thus, the total number of pơ mu trees cut down is up to 13 trees with a volume of over 15.3m3 at.

From the images and clips recorded by the Cam Muon Forest Protection Management Station, Que Phong District Police have investigated and identified a number of subjects who cut down 13 po mu trees. Currently, this agency is continuing to focus on fighting and clarifying.

Po mu wood is a precious wood in group I in the ranking of wood groups in Vietnam, with beautiful grain, light and durable, not susceptible to termites and effective in repelling insects. According to folk experience, po mu wood has the ability to resist termites, so po mu wood is widely used in the interior design industry as well as the export industry. Because it is a precious and rare wood, the economic value of po mu trees is very high. Po mu trees are an endangered species in Vietnam and were included in the group of woods in the Vietnam Red Book in 1996.
