Automatic cars are becoming more and more popular in the world and Vietnam is no exception. The biggest advantage is the simplicity of driving, freeing the driver's left foot and right hand to concentrate more.

However, its rapid popularity in a short time has caused much controversy, because it is actually more complicated than a manual transmission, even though it seems simpler.

Below are 13 "golden" notes to operate this type of gearbox, for the most efficiency and safety:

1. Immediately before starting the engine, you must perform the following operations: fully depress the brake pedal, put the gear lever in position “P”, and pull the handbrake.

2. Always apply the brake pedal when shifting the gear lever to another position. Never put your foot on the accelerator pedal when shifting the gear lever from “P” or “N” to any other position on the gear lever.

3. Do not press the lock button on the gear lever frequently, because the gear lever may accidentally shift to the “R” position.

4. Do not shift the gear lever to “N” position while the vehicle is moving. Serious accidents can occur if you accidentally shift the gear lever to “P” or “R” position or if the vehicle is not engine-braked.

5. Always keep your foot on the brake pedal when shifting to “N” or from “N” to another position to avoid the risk of losing control.

6. If the gear position indicator light flashes while you are driving, there may be a fault in the automatic transmission. Take your vehicle to a service workshop for inspection as soon as possible.

7. Before shifting gears with the engine running and the vehicle stationary, fully depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from moving forward. The vehicle will begin to move when shifting gears, especially at high engine speeds, at high idle (when the engine is cold) or with the air conditioning on. Only release the brake when you are ready to drive away.

8. Always use your right foot to brake. Using your left foot when braking can reduce your braking reflex in an emergency.

9. To avoid sudden acceleration, never step on the accelerator when shifting the gear lever from the “P” or “N” position.

10. If you press the accelerator and brake pedal at the same time, it will affect the braking efficiency and cause abnormal brake pad wear.

11. Do not step on the accelerator while the brake pedal is pressed and the vehicle is stopped as this may damage the automatic transmission.

12. Avoid placing bottles or other objects on the floor because they may roll and jam the brake/accelerator pedal.

13. Avoid wearing sandals while driving because the spin or sole of the sandal can get caught on the accelerator or brake pedal, hindering vehicle control.
