17 years old Asian table tennis champion
17-year-old Japanese female tennis player Miu Hirano created a stir when she defeated 3 Chinese stars in a row to be crowned Asian table tennis champion.
In the quarter-finals, Miu Hirano unexpectedly defeated tennis player Ding Ning, who holds the Olympic championship and world number one position.
The Seamaster 2017 ITTF Asian Championships is taking place in Wuxi City (China) from April 9 to 16, 2017 with 7 events: men's team, women's team, men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, mixed doubles. The earthquake occurred in the women's singles event when the youngest World Cup champion in history, Miu Hirano, consecutively eliminated 3 top Chinese players in the world to be crowned champion.
In the quarterfinals, Miu Hirano surprisingly defeated Olympic champion and world number one Ding Ning. Ding Ning opened the match with a fierce attack and won 2-0 (11-3, 14-12). She only needed one more set to finish the match.
However, the surprise happened when Miu Hirano made a spectacular comeback, winning 3 sets with the scores of 11-9, 16-14 and 12-10 to win the final 3-2. Notably, the day of the quarter-final match (April 14) was the day Miu Hirano turned 17. Hirano entered the semi-final against world number two Zhu Yuling with a convincing 3-0 victory (11-7, 11-9 and 11-8). The young Japanese girl won the ticket to the final of the Asian Championship with a posture that made her opponents respect her.
Entering the final against world number five Chen Meng, Miu Hirano again defeated her opponent convincingly with a score of 3-0 (11-9, 11-8 and 11-7), thereby winning the Asian Table Tennis Championship. Miu Hirano currently holds the record for the youngest Women's Table Tennis World Cup champion in history.
Despite losing the women's singles gold medal to Miu Hirano, Chinese table tennis still showed its near-absolute dominance by winning all the gold medals in the remaining 6 events. At this year's Asian Championship, Chinese table tennis also witnessed the unexpected defeat of Ma Long (current world number one, 2016 Olympics champion) in the round of 32.
