18 years in prison for man who burned his wife with gasoline out of jealousy
On February 22, the Hanoi People's Court opened a trial and sentenced defendant Nguyen Van Thanh (born in 1991, residing in Bach Thach village, Hoa Thach commune, Quoc Oai district, Hanoi) to 18 years in prison for murder.
The main victim was Thanh's wife - Ms. Nguyen Thuy Dung (born 1994, in Quoc Oai, Hanoi)
Nguyen Van Thanh and Ms. Dung got married in 2012. They have two daughters together.
During their marriage, Dung was repeatedly beaten by her husband. Once, she had to go to the commune police station to sign a bail form for her husband because he was discovered to be using drugs.
Ms. Dung took her two children back to her mother's house and lived separately from her husband since mid-2015. During that time, she received threatening text messages from her husband many times.
At around 1:30 p.m. on February 9, 2016 (the second day of Lunar New Year 2016), Ms. Dung rode a motorbike with her two children, Ms. Phi Thi Duyen (her biological mother) and Ms. Do Thi Thanh to her husband's parents' house to celebrate Tet. When leaving, Ms. Dung brought a pre-written divorce petition to ask her husband to sign.
At Dung's husband's house, seeing Do Thi Thanh holding his wife's phone, Thanh borrowed the phone and checked. Discovering that his wife's phone had dating messages and invitations to go out from an unknown number, Thanh suspected that Dung was having a relationship with another man and was angry.
When Ms. Dung gave Thanh a pre-written divorce petition and asked him to sign it, Thanh did not agree and even raised his voice about Ms. Dung dating someone else.
When Dung asked for the phone back, Thanh kept the SIM card and only gave his wife the phone.
At 4 p.m. the same day, when Dung and everyone else started to leave, Thanh went into the kitchen to get a bottle of gasoline, took a lighter and ran to where his wife was standing. He opened the cap of the bottle of gasoline and repeatedly poured it on Dung's face and body. Dung only had time to cover her face before her husband lit the fire and set her on fire.
The fire broke out from Thanh’s hands and spread to Dung’s face, hands, and front of her body. The victim screamed and fell down.
Seeing her daughter in trouble, Mrs. Duyen shouted and tried to put out the fire. Ms. Thanh threw a bucket of water to put out the fire but it was unsuccessful. Everyone had to cover Ms. Dung with their coats and blankets to put out the fire.
The victim was taken to the emergency room afterward. Although her life was saved, Ms. Dung’s body injury rate at the time of assessment was 80%.
In court, Thanh confessed to all his crimes. He cited jealousy as the reason for his decision to burn his wife with gasoline to destroy her beauty, leaving her without the opportunity to have sex with another man.
In addition to the prison sentence, Thanh was also ordered by the Court to pay 180 million VND in compensation to the victim./.
