The incident occurred at around 11:40 a.m. Seven people were rescued after the landslide buried 18 buildings and covered an area of nearly 20,000 square meters with earth and rocks, AP reported, citing a notice posted online by the fire department of the Public Security Bureau of China.

According to information from China Central Television (CCTV), there is a residential area located right next to the Liuxi Industrial Park in the Guangming New District. Among the buried buildings are two dormitories that housed workers.

Shenzhen firefighters said they found eight more people trapped and were working to rescue them.

Most residents had been evacuated to safety before the incident, according to Ren Jiguang, deputy chief of the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau. About 600 rescue workers are currently at the scene.

The Beijing Youth Daily quoted a local resident as saying that the amount of earth and rock that fell on the area was piled up during construction over the past two years, forming a mound of earth up to 100 meters high.
