No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, the “method of using children as human shields” to carry out bombings has often been carried out by the Boko Haram insurgent group in recent times.

The Boko Haram militant group has been conducting armed operations in Nigeria since 2009 with the aim of establishing an Islamic state.

At least 20,000 people have been killed, thousands kidnapped and more than 2.6 million displaced in attacks by the extremist group in Nigeria and neighboring Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

In early 2015, Boko Haram seized a large area of territory in northeastern Nigeria. The Nigerian army, with the support of international forces, later liberated most of the area. However, Boko Haram continued to carry out attacks, suicide bombings and hostage-taking in northeastern Nigeria and neighboring countries./.
