When completed, the Hai Phong International Gateway Port will be able to accommodate container ships of up to 8,000 TEU, helping to eliminate the need for Vietnamese goods to be transshipped through regional ports as is currently the case.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, along with leaders from various ministries and agencies, officially launched the project this morning in Cat Hai district, Hai Phong. The Hai Phong International Gateway Port project commenced after nine years of preparation, including four years of detailed planning research, three years of project development, appraisal, and approval, and two years of detailed design and bidding. According to the plan, the port will be built south of the Lach Huyen estuary, along the existing port access channel, with a total berth length of approximately 8,000 meters and a total channel length of approximately 18 kilometers.

The Hai Phong International Gateway Port is equipped with modern and integrated infrastructure and handling technology, capable of receiving large container ships with a capacity of 4,000-6,000 TEU and up to 8,000 TEU in later phases of the project (equivalent to ships with a capacity of 100,000 tons operating on long-distance shipping routes). The total investment for the project is approximately 25,000 billion VND, implemented through a public-private partnership using ODA funds from Japan and the state budget.

The Hai Phong International Gateway Port is expected to play a central role, with other seaports and inland ports acting as satellites, forming a dynamic and efficient logistics system and becoming an international cargo transshipment hub. This will meet the growing demand, allowing export goods from the Northern region to go directly to European and American markets. This will eliminate the need for transshipment through regional ports such as Singapore and Hong Kong, reducing transportation costs and increasing the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods. Furthermore, the port will attract a large volume of transit cargo from Northeast Laos and Southern China.

The project, expected to be completed in 2016, will contribute to the implementation of Vietnam's Maritime Strategy until 2020, aiming to make Vietnam a strong maritime nation; with the marine economy contributing approximately 53-55% of GDP, 55-60% of export turnover, effectively addressing social issues, and significantly improving the lives of people in coastal and maritime areas…

Affirming the important role of the sea and the marine economy, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung emphasized that the Hai Phong International Gateway Port Project is of great significance to the socio-economic development of Hai Phong in particular, the region, and the whole country in general.

The Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration to direct the implementation of the bidding packages with the highest sense of responsibility to ensure the project is completed on schedule and with guaranteed quality. Hai Phong City should closely coordinate with the investor during the project implementation, promptly resolve any arising issues, and ensure environmental sanitation, labor safety, and security and order in the area.

The Prime Minister also requested that Japanese contractors, drawing on their experience in organizing, managing, and constructing international projects, fulfill their signed commitments and strive to complete the contract with the highest quality and on schedule so that the project can be put into operation as soon as possible.
