Presented last Sunday at the European Society for Health (ESC), this study suggests that moderate-intensity exercise significantly reduces the risk of heart failure in the 50-60 age group. This conclusion was reached after monitoring the health of volunteers aged 30-60 over a period of time.
The subjects selected all had one thing in common: they rarely or never exercised. For the study, experts measured several key indicators of aging in the volunteers' blood. After just six months, these indicators reflected positive changes within their bodies.
Sanjay Sharma, a British professor of cardiology, asserts that everyone should develop a habit of exercising daily, as a 50% reduction in the risk of heart failure is "extremely significant" in medical terms.
"Furthermore, exercise can add 3-7 years to your lifespan. It's a therapy that combats physical weakness, improves cognitive function, and now we even have evidence that it can slow the onset of dementia," he said. "Aging is inevitable, but we can delay it."
"We can look younger than 70 and live to be 90," the professor optimistically stated, adding that it's never too late to start exercising.
Several other independent studies have found that older adults who start exercising at age 70 are less likely to develop atherosclerosis, a disease that affects 10% of people over 80 in Europe.
Besides jogging, light aerobic exercises, strength training, and fitness exercises all have a positive impact on the body's aging indicators. Researchers have also found that endurance or high-intensity exercises are more effective than simply lifting weights, as they increase the activity of the enzyme telomarase and repair aging DNA.
They argue that by measuring the increased activity of the aforementioned enzyme and the decrease in p16 levels (both indicators of cellular aging in the blood) over a six-month period, doctors can demonstrate that regular exercise activates the body's anti-aging process. "This research helps us better understand why physical activity has such an effect. We understand the process of cellular aging and how exercise can impact that process at the cellular level," commented Professor Christi Deaton of Cambridge University School of Medicine.
"The more consistently you exercise, the greater the benefits; when you started forming the habit no longer matters," the professor recommended. The recommended amount of exercise is 150 minutes per week.
