The NGO Save the Children reports that at least 250,000 children in Syria are living in “open prisons” and are forced to eat grass or animal feed to survive. Many families surveyed in the Save the Children report confided that sometimes they go to bed hungry all day.

Hassan, a father in a family in East Ghouta, near Damascus, said that when there was no food, his family had to eat grass to survive. Hassan was forced to lie to his children, telling them that the grass was edible, even though everyone knew it was just self-deception. Marwan, a boy also living in East Ghouta, said he had lost a third of his body weight since his area was besieged.

In the besieged strongholds east of Damascus, many children have died from preventable diseases. According to Dr. Nizar, he has seen many children die from malnutrition or lack of medicine. Skin and intestinal diseases are spreading in these areas as the besiegers cut off the water supply, forcing people to use contaminated water. In addition, many children are also suffering from pneumonia due to exposure to smoke and dust from explosions.

Maternal care is virtually non-existent in these areas. Amira, a mother living in a besieged area in northern Homs province, said that many women have died due to a lack of midwives or postpartum hemorrhage.
