Hero Phan Dinh Giot used his body to cover the loophole. |
On the afternoon of March 13, 1954, our troops opened fire and destroyed Him Lam. The entire battlefield was shaken by several rounds of artillery fire. The soldiers of the 58th Company rushed forward to clear the way, and continuously hit the eighth explosive. Phan Dinh Giot hit the ninth and was wounded in the thigh, but still volunteered to hit the next one. The French concentrated their firepower and rained bullets down on our battlefield, injuring many of their comrades.
With his hatred for the enemy rising, Phan Dinh Giot rushed forward and fired two more consecutive shots, breaking through the last fence, opening the way for his comrades to attack the bunker at the bridgehead. Taking advantage of the enemy's confusion, he rushed forward, holding on to bunker number 2, throwing grenades, and firing to restrain the unit from advancing. He was wounded in the shoulder and thigh, bleeding profusely. However, suddenly, the enemy's firepower from bunker number 3 fired very strongly at our formation. The assault force was jammed, he tried to move closer to bunker number 3 with the only burning thought of extinguishing this bunker.
He used all his remaining strength to raise his submachine gun and shoot hard into the loophole and shouted loudly: "Determined to sacrifice for the Party, for the people", then leaned forward to gain momentum and rushed with his youthful chest to cover the enemy loophole. The most powerful fire point of the French army was extinguished, the whole unit rushed forward like a storm, completely destroying the Him Lam stronghold, winning the opening battle of the Dien Bien Phu campaign.
Phan Dinh Giot died at 10:30 p.m. on March 13, 1954 at the age of 34. Phan Dinh Giot was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces on March 31, 1955.

Hero Tran Can. |
During the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, in the opening battle on Him Lam hill, Tran Can was assigned to command a squad to penetrate deep into the command post and plant President Ho's "Determined to fight and win" flag on the Him Lam base.
In this battle, Tran Can's squad captured 25 enemies and seized many weapons. Notably, in the battle to capture Hill 507, Tran Can bravely led the squad to attack and capture the Flagpole.
When we and the enemy fought hand-to-hand, Tran Can was seriously wounded, but with fierce determination, Tran Can replaced the company cadre to continue commanding the combat unit, resolutely holding the position to advance with the entire unit to occupy the command post in the center of Muong Thanh, contributing to the complete destruction of the enemy stronghold. Due to being too seriously wounded, Tran Can heroically sacrificed himself on the morning of May 7, 1954, just 1 hour before the victory.
With his outstanding achievements in combat, Tran Can was awarded two Military Exploit Medals (Second and Third Class), one Military Exploit Medal First Class, and was twice elected as an Emulation Fighter of the 312th Division. On May 7, 1956, he was posthumously awarded the Second Class Military Exploit Medal and the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Hero Dang Dinh Ho. |
Hero Dang Dinh Ho was born in 1925, from Thanh Binh commune (now Phong Thinh commune), Thanh Chuong district. Enlisted in 1950, Dang Dinh Ho had a flexible and bold fighting style. Once he opened fire, he resolutely volunteered to destroy the enemy. Even though he was wounded, he continued to fight, which encouraged the unit to compete enthusiastically to kill the enemy and gain achievements.
At the Battle of Doi Moi in the Hoa Binh Campaign (January 1952), when the gunfire broke out, he quickly led a group of three people to charge to the open gate, occupy the bunker at the bridgehead, creating conditions for the unit to attack straight into the center, destroy an enemy company, and control the battlefield. During the fight, Dang Dinh Ho was wounded in both eyes, but he left the scene so that his comrades could help him back to the medical station, leaving the stretcher to another comrade.
In April 1954, Dang Dinh Ho was in charge of the deputy platoon leader of the regiment's brave platoon in the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The unit received orders to coordinate with a friendly company to attack the enemy command post on Hill C. Entering the battle, his comrades had not yet opened the door when they suffered many casualties. Dang Dinh Ho asked to go up to attack, but the explosives had run out and he had to wait. In the meantime, he was unfortunately injured. But he still resolutely stayed behind to command the unit, waiting for the explosives to open the door before letting his comrades take him out.
Hero Dang Dinh Ho was awarded 2 Second Class Military Exploit Medals, 7 times praised by the battalion, regiment, and division, and was an Emulation Fighter of the regiment. On May 7, 1956, Dang Dinh Ho was awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Medal and the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
