3 US special forces killed on patrol
The New York Times of the United States quoted military officials as saying that on October 4, three soldiers from the US Army Special Forces and two Nigerien soldiers were killed and two others were injured in an ambush in southwestern Niger while the group was on a joint patrol.

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the ambush, but did not comment on the information about the US soldiers killed.
Meanwhile, RFI quoted two Niger officials as saying that unknown attackers killed a number of soldiers in an area near the border with Mali.
The area where the attack took place is home to several rebel groups, including the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
