There are many reasons why Wi-Fi speed is affected, but most often it is due to users misconfiguring or placing the router in the wrong place. How to fix this situation?

In the Mac Geek Gab 509 show, Alf Watt, a former Apple engineer, shared some tips to speed up Wi-Fi that you shouldn't miss.

1. Use the same SSID (network name)

To extend the Wi-Fi coverage area in the house, many people often have the habit of using old routers or cheap signal boosters to create a few new access points (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency). However, for the best results, try to use the same SSID (Wi-Fi network name) for all access points.

By default, your smartphone will automatically connect to your preferred Wi-Fi hotspots, even if the network is slow or has limited bandwidth. However, when you use the same SSID, your device will have to analyze and choose the best connection point.

2. Solve congestion with access points

If the area you live in has too many connection points, your home Wi-Fi will definitely be affected, especially in apartments. To solve this problem, users can reduce the router's transmission power to avoid being affected by surrounding networks, and at the same time buy additional signal boosters to expand coverage through power lines (Wireless Powerline Adapter).

First, log in to the router by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and the password into the browser. Then go to Basic Settings > Wireless LAN > Common Settings > Tx Power and fill in the appropriate number, but still within the allowed range, finally click Apply to save. Note, the name and location of the options may vary depending on the type of router you are using.

Additionally, you can also purchase new routers to switch to the 5 GHz band to reduce congestion.

3. Change the direction of the antenna on the router

If your router has two antennas, point one up and one horizontally at right angles. This will help the Wi-Fi signal travel farther and be less likely to be absorbed by thick brick walls.
