Thanks to the implementation of the satellite hospital project, the overcrowding situation in higher-level hospitals has been reduced.

On the morning of April 16th, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Health held a conference to review the first two years of implementing the Satellite Hospital Project in 2013-2014.

According to a report by the Ministry of Health, after two years of implementing the Satellite Hospital Project, the country has 14 core hospitals tasked with transferring technology to 48 satellite hospitals in 5 specialties: cardiology, trauma surgery, oncology, obstetrics, and pediatrics.

Several satellite hospitals have mastered advanced medical techniques transferred from the core hospital, enabling patients, especially the poor, to access high-tech services at lower-level medical facilities. Examples include provincial general hospitals in Phu Tho, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Lam Dong, and Quang Nam provinces. To date, 39 out of 46 hospitals have had their satellite hospital projects approved by the Provincial People's Committee. The rate of patients requiring referral to higher-level hospitals is trending downwards, contributing to reducing the burden on higher-level hospitals.

In the coming period, the Ministry of Health will continue to promote the transfer of advanced technical expertise to core hospitals and satellite hospitals; and accelerate the application of information technology and supplement human resources for satellite hospitals.

Associate Professor-Doctor Luong Ngoc Khue, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health, stated: In 2015, the Ministry of Health continued to implement the Prime Minister's Notice 99, designating Hanoi Heart Hospital as a core hospital and five other specialized and general hospitals in other provinces as satellite hospitals. Thus, we will have 15 core hospitals and 52 satellite hospitals nationwide. This adjustment, distribution, and technology transfer is the result of the efforts of doctors at higher levels and medical staff at lower levels.
