4 ways to keep your feet free of intertrigo

To avoid bunions, giant toes, calluses, swelling on the side of the foot, affecting walking and sports, the following can take good care of the feet:

1- Shoe fitting: Shoes should have a wide, flexible sole that supports the foot and has enough room for the big toe. A straight back keeps the heel in good position. Some shoes can be fitted with enough room for the big toe to avoid bunions. Avoid heels higher than 2.5cm.

2- Add some padding: You can protect your bunion with adhesive pads available at drugstores. If you have bunion in one shoe, add a support plate to the other shoe to take the pressure off the bunion.

3- Soothe sore joints: Ice packs and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advin, Motrin) can relieve pain.

4- See a doctor: Professionals can evaluate bunions and suggest additional solutions such as shoe fitting to stabilize the foot, cortisone injections to relieve pain and inflammation, ultrasound therapy, and surgery to realign the joint.
