This is a condition of weakened function of the veins in the legs, meaning that the blood flow back to the heart is no longer effective, causing blood to stagnate in the lower part of the legs and gradually spread up. At first, the patient may see red or blue spider webs in the calves. As the disease gets worse, blood stagnates in the legs, causing the patient to feel uncomfortable in the legs: tension in the calves, tired legs... and symptoms of restless leg syndrome (having to shake or put the legs up to feel comfortable).
More severe cases include discoloration, dystrophy, and eczema of the legs. In many cases, if left untreated, the legs will develop ulcers, usually on the ankles. The disease can easily lead to complications such as blood clots forming in the varicose veins, which can spread to the lungs and cause pulmonary embolism, which can lead to death.
Swollen, tired legs; heavy calves; ants crawling along the calves; night cramps can be symptoms of varicocele. However, many people do not pay attention to it and just think their legs are tired from walking all day, wearing shoes that are too tight...
People at high risk of the disease are women aged 35-50, who work standing or sitting for long periods of time and have early symptoms such as pain, swelling, and heavy legs in the afternoon.
Depending on the severity of the disease, doctors apply different measures: Treating the disease with medication or surgery with sclerotherapy, removing varicose veins, etc. Patients need to maintain an active lifestyle, walk every day, pay attention to maintaining a reasonable body weight, quit smoking... Absolutely do not soak your feet in hot water because it will cause the veins to dilate further, the feet may swell, causing more pain.
In order to help the community better understand the importance of early detection and treatment of the disease, preventing it from progressing to more severe stages, the free chronic venous insufficiency screening program takes place in July and August at many major hospitals in Hanoi (including Bach Mai, Hanoi Heart and Saint Paul hospitals) and in Ho Chi Minh City at Gia Dinh, Tan Phu, Cho Ray, 115 and Trung Vuong People's Hospitals.
