If you were adrift in the ocean for days, would you know how to find food or create fresh water to drink?

1. Survive in the ocean

Imagine you are on a ship lost in the middle of the ocean, how would you survive? The three things that will help you survive are food, water and warmth.

First, there is food in the sea and you need to know how to get it. In 1942, a British sailor spent 133 days adrift at sea by turning a flashlight wire into a fishing rod. You can refer to this idea. If you don’t have anything similar, find pieces of cloth and make a net, then drop it into the water to collect seaweed or plankton.

To have fresh water to drink, you should make a water purifier, consisting of two different sized water tanks and a nylon bag (as shown above). When the sea water in the large tank evaporates, the nylon bag will block it and the water will condense in the small tank.

Heat stroke can be more dangerous than prolonged starvation. In addition, sunlight reflected off the sea surface can damage the retina. Therefore, use a shirt or some other piece of cloth to cover your head and eyes.

2. Waterproof matches

Fire is an important element to help you survive in many situations. However, if the match or lighter gets wet, you will not be able to use it. To avoid this situation, you should find a way to waterproof them in advance. For matches, you can paint a layer of clear nail polish around the match head and let it dry.

3. Survival kit

A survival kit contains the essentials to help you stay warm, find food, water, or provide first aid.

Get a small box or jar and put the following things inside: a few matches, matchsticks, adhesive bandages, aluminum foil, a razor blade, a roll of thread, a piece of tape and a wet towel.

4. Make fire with wet wood

This technique is called making a “Swedish torch.” Place the log vertically and make several symmetrical cuts, as deep as possible. Then, gather some twigs or dry grass, stuff them inside and light a fire.

The log will catch fire very quickly and can burn for 2-5 hours, regardless of size or type of tree.
