Off-road vehicle modification always brings joy and excitement to anyone who is passionate about this "torture". 5 parts to upgrade for an off-road vehicle |
With different off-road needs of each person, depending on the terrain of each area, or even the style of each individual, car modifications come in many forms. However, at least for a car to be able to overcome difficult terrain (offroad), the owner usually upgrades the following 5 basic parts:
1. Tire size
![]() |
For an off-road vehicle, the tires probably account for 70% of the rugged appearance, and having a tire set that is suitable for the terrain is very important. If you only climb rocks or run on sand, AT tires are suitable, but for muddy terrain, MT tires must be used. For most roads, a set of MT tires is probably a good choice for both on-road and off-road driving.
Bigger tires don’t necessarily mean better. The drivetrain and axles are always affected when changing to bigger tires, a set of 33-inch tires is probably the most suitable for an off-road vehicle, but for muddy roads or deep ruts, 33-inch tires may not be enough.
2. Install additional winch
![]() |
This is probably an indispensable equipment for an off-road vehicle. Normally, when choosing a winch, choose a winch that can pull about 1.5 to 2 times the weight of the vehicle. For example, if the vehicle weighs 2 tons, you should choose a winch that can pull 3-4 tons (about 8000 lb). The winch mount and front bumper are also extremely important.
3. Lower the center of gravity
![]() |
Low center of gravity makes the car safer both on-road and off-road, however, it seems that very few people are willing to cut the bodywork (tire shafts, fenders...) to install larger tires, but usually choose to buy a whole set of lifting from 2 inches to 6 inches or even 10 inches. However, if it is not a monster car specialized in wading through mud, just lifting 2-3 inches is enough.
Good shock absorbers are also important, there are many companies that specialize in producing shock absorbers specifically for offroad with high quality and longer working stroke.
4. Lose weight
![]() |
When first starting to modify a car, many people will be overwhelmed by the countless beautiful equipment such as front and rear bumpers, roof racks, protection bars, underbody shields... With "full option" equipment like this, the car looks like it can go anywhere, but in reality it is too heavy and not easy to off-road.
So pay attention to the weight of the accessories when you start to modify your car, it may not look cool but the lighter the car, the stronger and easier to handle. When going off-road, you should only bring the necessary equipment for the trip on the car, leave unnecessary things at home.
5. Underbody protection
![]() |
A low center of gravity will be safer but at the same time will increase the possibility of damage to the underbody components such as: engine oil tank bottom, transfer case, axle... Choose hard and light underbody guards to protect these components. Side guards are also very necessary, especially when climbing rocks. For vehicles with solid axles, it is also necessary to pay attention to protecting the steering system and axle.
