5 basic things to keep your car durable

As a man, owning a car (or several) to pick up family, girlfriend, go to work or entertain friends is a really great thing. However, lacking the basic knowledge needed to maintain the car in the best working condition can cause a lot of discomfort in the long run. To avoid expensive repair and warranty bills after a period of using the car and even increase the safety of the car, keep in mind the following 5 basic things.

1. Engine oil and gearbox oil

Oil cools, cleans and lubricates the engine of the vehicle; not changing the oil for too long causes the engine to become dirty, increases wear and reduces the life and power of the engine.

Being proactive about changing your oil is not difficult; your vehicle’s owner’s manual or a reputable garage can tell you exactly how many miles you should drive before you need to change your oil. If you tend to forget, ask the garage to call you at regular intervals, depending on how much you use your vehicle.

2. Tire pressure

Tires are the only part that connects the car to the road, so they will greatly affect the driving feeling and safety of the car. Over-inflated tires will make the car bumpy and reduce traction; while under-inflated tires will make the car run sluggishly and consume more fuel.

Most cars have a small sticker on the driver’s door that shows the ideal tire pressure for your car. Newer cars will also have a message on the center display if the tire pressure is incorrect. Pay attention to this detail and tell the mechanic exactly what pressure your tire needs.

3. Clean the wipers

Driving in the rain with dirty wiper blades that leave streaks on the windshield is a safety disaster. Inspect and clean the wiper blades both front and back every month and replace them whenever the rubber blades are worn.

4. Brake fluid

Have your garage staff check your brake fluid every time you change your engine oil. It can always leak during operation, and brake fluid must always be kept to a certain level to keep the brakes working effectively.

5. Engine coolant

Along with brake fluid, engine coolant is also a solution that must always be ensured to be adequate. Good cooling helps maintain engine life and is quite important in Vietnam with its tropical climate.
