Test-taking skills are very important for every candidate. |
Take 5 – 10 minutes to read the question
For both essay and multiple choice tests, students should spend 5-10 minutes after receiving the test from the invigilator to review the test. During these 5-10 minutes, students should skim through the test to see how it is organized, which parts are easy for them to do right away, and which areas are difficult.
Teacher Do Ngoc Ha - Hanoi shared his experience of taking the university entrance exam: "According to the regulations, within 15 minutes of receiving the exam paper, students must check the exam code, see if the page is missing, and must turn the exam paper face down at exactly 2:30 p.m. to start taking the exam. I took advantage of these precious 5-10 minutes to quickly narrow down the easy/difficult parts and find the answers to a few easy questions, remembering in my head, by the time I started taking the exam, I had already finished 3-4 easy questions."
Also according to the advice of teacher Do Ngoc Ha, the exam questions from 2015 were arranged from easy to difficult, so after carefully checking the exam questions, students can carefully read through and choose the answers to the easy questions on the first page, but remember to memorize the answers in your head and not write them down, you may be reminded if the examiner is strict.
Allocate time to do the test reasonably
Many students start the test by working hard from beginning to end without allocating their own time. To ensure the most reasonable time for the test, 90 minutes for multiple choice questions and 180 minutes for essay questions, students need to ensure the following 3 principles:
First, do the easy questions first, then the difficult ones. To know which questions are easy and which are difficult, students need to know which parts they are best at/weak at during the review process. Students can easily determine the order of essay questions but have difficulty with the 60 multiple choice questions. Fortunately, because the test is arranged relatively from easy to difficult, students can follow this order.
Second, the average time is 18 minutes/1 essay question; 1.8 minutes/1 multiple choice question. However, students should determine in advance how many questions they can do at most. If they only determine that they can do 8 questions, they should divide the time to 23 minutes/1 question and depending on the difficulty/length/complexity, spend more time.
Third, don’t “force yourself to do” a question. Spending time on a question you are not sure of means you may miss out on questions that you can quickly solve later.
Some tips to increase your score
For Math, after completing the same number of questions, Mr. Le Ba Tran Phuong (Lecturer at Industrial University) shared a few tips to get the highest score that students should know. Because the score is calculated based on the correct answer, students need to pay attention to clearly presenting the important transformations that cannot be ignored to get the result. After being sure of the answers they have completed, students continue to develop the "difficult" questions. If they have guessed the solution but cannot develop the result, they should still present the steps they have developed or draw a picture (for spatial geometry), find the determining condition (if any) ... to earn each precious 0.25 point.
For multiple choice tests, remember to fill in all the answer boxes on the test. If you cannot find the answer, use the process of elimination and find the answer you feel is correct.
Absolutely avoid classic presentation mistakes
Presentation errors often lead to the most regrettable deductions. Especially in Math, deductions are often due to crossed-out and completed parts that are easily missed when marking, drawing graphs that do not match the problem's intention, presenting the problem too long/too sketchy...
To make a good impression on the examiner, students need to present themselves clearly and spaciously, with notes on the number of questions/ideas. At the end of each problem, there should be a concluding sentence, which can be a rewrite of the answer or an answer to the question of the problem so that the examiner knows whether the candidate has finished the problem well.
Take 5 – 10 minutes to review your essay.
The last 5-10 minutes are very precious. During these 5-10 minutes, students review the entire test to minimize the number of negative points. For essay subjects, students check basic information such as the number of test papers, registration number; check the answers of each question to see if they have implemented it correctly, have forgotten to set a condition, have eliminated the solution, check if the solution satisfies the question, is the result correct as drafted?...
For multiple choice exams, students need to pay attention to important information such as registration number, exam code, check the circled answers with the filled answers, check carefully to avoid filling in too faint answers or filling in 2 answers... Although these things are very small, if the psychology in the exam room is not stable, it is very easy to encounter.
With these 5 notes are indispensable skills for students to complete their exams correctly, sufficiently, completely and perfectly.
