The investigation at the trial revealed that Lu Van Thach's older sister, Lu Thi Kim (born in 1987), married and settled in China. Kim called Thach and asked him to find and bring Lo Thi Hom (born in 1994, residing in Bac Ly commune, Ky Son district) to China. Kim promised to pay Thach 20 million VND.

In early November 2013, Thach found Ms. Hom and lured her to China. To gain Ms. Hom and her family's consent, Thach promised to give Ms. Hom's father 10 million VND upfront, and another 5 million VND upon Ms. Hom's arrival in China. On the morning of November 8, 2013, Ms. Hom and her father went to Huoi Tu commune (Ky Son district) to meet Thach as arranged. There, Thach gave Ms. Hom's father 10 million VND and an additional 200,000 VND for gas. Afterwards, Thach used his motorbike to take Ms. Hom to Muong Xen town to catch a bus north to China. However, upon reaching Huoi Dun village, Huoi Tu commune, they were apprehended by the My Ly Border Guard Post task force.

At the trial, Lu Van Thach sincerely confessed to the crime as stated in the indictment. Considering that the defendant is from an ethnic minority group, has a good character, limited legal knowledge, is a first-time offender, and did not cause serious consequences, the court sentenced Lu Van Thach to 5 years in prison. Additionally, the court ordered the defendant to pay 2 million VND in compensation as requested by the victim.
