5 mistakes when exfoliating that make your skin worse
Not covering or not using sunscreen after exfoliating makes the skin susceptible to sunburn and premature aging.
Exfoliation helps remove sebum and dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin. This is the cause of clogged pores, acne, and prevents the skin from absorbing nutrients. However, if not done properly, exfoliation can also cause your skin to deteriorate, even causing irritation and itching.
Choose exfoliating products that are not suitable for your skin type.
Each skin type has its own characteristics, so choosing the right product is very important.
For oily skin, you should choose products containing oil-absorbing ingredients such as clay, activated charcoal or BHA chemical ingredients. Sensitive skin should limit the use of products containing coarse particles because they can easily damage the skin, instead choose peeling exfoliants.
Dry skin is suitable for gels and makeup removers containing AHA. Combination skin should choose products that can both clean but still ensure no irritation such as peeling.
Over-exfoliation
You should only exfoliate 1-2 times per week depending on your skin condition. Overuse of this product can damage your skin, making it more susceptible to sunburn and premature aging.
Rubbing too hard
Whether you have acne or not, vigorous scrubbing is not recommended. Exfoliating products always contain cleansing ingredients, so you just need to apply evenly and massage gently, focusing on the T-zone to remove sebum. Combining with scrubbing tools such as facial cleansing brushes and sponges is not necessary.
No moisturizer
After exfoliation, the skin often loses necessary moisture, so you can compensate by using a moisturizing mask or if you don't have much time, use a mineral spray or moisturizer.
Do not use sunscreen
The best time to exfoliate is at night. After using these products, you should limit sun exposure and pay more attention to shielding and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays than usual because at this time the skin tends to be more susceptible to sunburn.
