On the evening of May 23, US President Barack Obama had the opportunity to enjoy a bun cha dinner at a restaurant on Le Van Huu Street, Hanoi. Sitting at the same table with him was famous American chef and TV host Anthony Bourdain. The conversation at the dinner table between US President Obama and chef Bourdain will appear in the 8th season of CNN's travel and culinary program "Parts Unknown", scheduled to air next September.
Chef Bourdain recently posted on li.st an article revealing six interesting experiences he had while dining with the US commander in chief.
"The president seemed very comfortable using chopsticks. He easily handled the vermicelli noodles served with grilled meat and the broth of bun cha. He even ate two servings," said chef Bourdain.
As Bourdain observed, the US President is a man who loves Asia. He spoke with nostalgia about his time in Indonesia and the taste of street food there. Mr. Obama lived in Indonesia with his mother from 1967 to 1971.
"The president clearly enjoyed sitting on a plastic chair eating bun cha. I got the impression it was a relaxing evening for him, even though he was surrounded by Secret Service agents," Bourdain shared.
"The reaction of Hanoi people to the US President choosing to eat bun cha was beyond imagination. It had an unbelievable effect. Everyone seemed to burst into tears, describing to me their surprise and pride at this completely unexpected choice of food and location," he added.
"The President was one of the few guests I invited to ask if the camera crew would eat with him. He was also the one who suggested taking a photo with them after the show was over," Bourdain wrote.
