6 things to keep in mind when putting a newborn baby in an air-conditioned room.

Newborns have weak immune systems, so when letting them sleep in air-conditioned rooms during hot weather, parents need to keep these things in mind.

The air conditioner temperature should be set between 26 and 28 degrees.

The neonatal period is considered to last from birth to 30 days of age. Newborns are unable to regulate their body temperature like older children or adults, especially premature babies. A newborn left undressed in a room at 23 degrees Celsius will feel as cold as an adult left undressed in a room at 0 degrees Celsius.

After birth, if a full-term baby is properly cared for, their normal body temperature will be around 36.5–37.5°C. If the baby is dressed in clothes, wearing mittens, socks, a hat, and covered with a blanket, they can tolerate a room temperature of 26–28°C. While this temperature might be too hot for adults, especially overweight individuals, it is cold for babies and requires adequate clothing as mentioned. Therefore, adults should not determine the room temperature for a newborn based solely on their own comfort.

Avoid sudden changes.

The sudden temperature difference between inside and outside an air-conditioned room can quickly weaken a child's immune system, making them susceptible to fever, colds, and coughs. Remember to open the door three minutes beforehand and let the child play nearby to get used to the warm air outside. Similarly, when a child comes in from outside and is sweating, wipe away the sweat and let them rest for at least three minutes in a normal room temperature, avoiding immediately taking them into a cold, air-conditioned room with a sudden drop in temperature.

Children should not sleep in an air-conditioned room 24/7.

Do not direct the air conditioner's airflow directly towards the child's sleeping area.

Young children have very sensitive respiratory systems. If the air conditioner's fan blows directly onto their face or head, children with weak immune systems are very susceptible to respiratory illnesses such as respiratory allergies, rhinitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and sore throats. The air conditioner should be placed high up. The air vent should not be directed directly at the child, and the fan speed should not be set too high. It should be set to the lowest speed and in oscillating mode; absolutely not in a fixed, angled position.

The air conditioner should not be turned on for more than 2-3 hours at a time.

The maximum time a mother should let her child sleep in an air-conditioned room is 2-3 hours at a time. This means that every 2-3 hours, the child should be taken out into normal temperature for 10-15 minutes. This is also the time to expel stagnant air and allow sunlight into the child's room.

The first time you turn on the air conditioner after a long winter, it needs thorough cleaning.

Air conditioners that are turned back on after a long winter need to be thoroughly cleaned, have their refrigerant refilled, and the dust removed from the filter to prevent mold, bacteria, or pathogens from accumulating in the machine and affecting children's respiratory systems.

Use nasal drops and give the child plenty of water to drink regularly.

Besides paying attention to how air conditioning is used, it's also important to consider children's health. While air conditioning provides a cool feeling, it can easily cause dry skin and a dry nose. Parents should remember to frequently use saline nasal drops for their children and ensure they drink plenty of water, especially breastfed babies, to prevent dehydration.
