(Baonghean.vn) - Peter Marra - Director of the Center for Migratory Birds said that cats are great pets but we should not let them go outside. At the same time, he added that globally there are 63 animal species that are threatened with extinction due to the explosion of the number of domestic cats.

Authorities in Omaui, in southern New Zealand, are considering banning cats. The local council will make a final decision on October 23.

If approved, cat owners in Omaui would be required to neuter and register their pets with the government and have their cats microchipped; they would also not be allowed to buy a new cat if their previous one died.

While banning cats in Omauni may seem negative in some ways, the measure is being considered in many other places, especially since cats are responsible for the deaths of millions of birds and mammals each year.

After learning about the cat ban, many locals spoke out against it. Many put together a petition to oppose the cat ban, pointing out the usefulness of cats in fighting rodents. Of course, there are also those who support the cat ban that the Omaui government is considering.

New Zealand is not the only country struggling with the issue of cat ownership. In Australia, a scientific study published in January 2017 warned of the dangers of domestic cats becoming feral. With 6.3 million feral cats in Australia, this creature would be responsible for the extinction of no less than 20 native species in Australia.
